Is there any way to expand the colors from the format properties...256 is way too low. Maybe something like the custom RBG color palette for fills?

As far as I know that option overrides one of the existing 256 colors...you cannot expand the number of colors available. Am I wrong?

Specific requirements for some detailed materials and it seems I am not even close to 256 even if I try to combine some of them.
What do you mean by "materials"? Is it for rendering (*.surf)?
No. Each material needs a different line color: for example I have 12 types of masonry walls made out of different types of bricks with different properties

Maybe you have to use the same line color but several fills or patterns to differentiate them...
