Question:

How can I check out a laptop and resume work as a normal CAD user with my usual settings and privileges?



Answer:

Log on as the Allplan administrator to the laptop.



Step 1: add computer to Workgroup Manager
The laptop needs to be integrated in the workgroup so that it can be used for data storage (data server). Do the following:

Create data folders:
Create a folder - 'Nemdata', for example - on the laptop and share it (full control).
Create the 'Allplan' subfolder in this folder. Create two subfolders - 'usr' and 'prj' - in the Allplan folder.
In this example: '...\Nemdata\Allplan\prj' and '...\Nemdata\Allplan\usr'

Add computer:
Start the Services application -> Workgroup Manager -> Administer projects and computer
In the "Remote projects" area on the left, click on Workgroup Server with the right mouse button and select Add computer on the shortcut menu.
Find the computer you want to add, open the local share and select the folder with the 'usr' and 'prj' subfolders (in this example: 'COMPUTERNAME\Nemdata\Allplan'). Confirm by clicking OK.

Install the "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" driver.
This driver is necessary so that network services are always running on the laptop.

Step 2: move user folder (optional)
Allplan 2013 and later: the user will be move automatically
(Start the Services application -> Workgroup Manager -> Administer users
Click with the right mouse button on selected user who is going to work on the laptop outside the network environment.
Select Properties
In the field user folder select the laptop
Repeat step 2 if several users are to work with the laptop.

Note:
If user folders have been moved to the laptop and this laptop has been checked out, the user in question can only work with the laptop and not in the office.)


Step 3: define project owner
A user can only move a project if he/she is the owner of this project.
The ownership of a project can only be changed by an Allplan administrator (or the owner of the project).
Allplan -> File -> ProjectPilot - Admin... ->
Click the relevant project with the right mouse button and select Properties on the shortcut menu.
Now you can define the owner.


Step 4: move projects
Log on as the user who wants to check out the laptop.
Start the Services application -> Workgroup Manager -> Administer projects and computer
In the "Remote projects" area on the left, select the computer with the projects you want to move.
Drag the projects one after the other to the laptop to be checked out.


Step 5: check out laptop
Start the Services application -> Workgroup Manager -> Administer projects and computer.
Click on your laptop and click on Check out at bottom right.
Confirm the message indicating that there are still user folders on the computer to be checked out.
Enter a comment and click OK. This comment is displayed if users in the office try to access a project on the computer checked out.
Specify which parts of the office standard are to be copied to the laptop and click OK to confirm.



Conclusion:

Now you can remove the laptop from the network and edit your projects when you are out of the office. To make sure that the projects are not changed in the office in the meantime, the projects that are on the computer checked out are locked for the CAD users on the network. These users see the comment you entered when you checked out the computer.


Note:

  • Only the local computer can be checked out (you cannot check out a different computer in the network).
  • Projects on this computer must neither be locked nor in use.

Allplan from version 2011

Parts of Allplan 2011 have been reprogrammed and are completely new. Allplan uses a graphics library, which has been developed especially for CAD programs and visualization tasks. Depending on the data type and application, the display speed of Allplan is much higher than that of earlier versions, and refresh operations are considerably shorter. What's more, you can create hidden line images in real time.
This new technology is not a one-to-one implementation of the software-based solution in the previous version. Instead, a hardware-based approach is used. When it comes to data processing, the graphics card takes on much of the work. The different behavior of these two technologies that may occur in some parts is inherent. Therefore, the resulting display and refresh operations may differ slightly from what you are used to.



General graphics card requirements for Allplan

To fully exploit hardware acceleration capabilities, you require an Open GL 2.0 and DirectX10 (chip-based) compatible graphics card with 512 MB or more memory. Although Windows XP does not support DirectX10, Allplan only requires the chip-based support of the graphics card to manage the graphics library. OpenGL 2.0 is used in 2D and in visualization windows. These changes employ the latest technology in graphic display, so selecting a capable graphics card, and using the proper drivers is essential.

Professional graphics cards versus Consumer-Level cards

Graphic card manufacturers typically have different product lines targeted for "gamers" and "professional users". While the hardware setup is very similar in case of both cards, there are key differences in their firmware and driver. "Consumer-Level cards" (such as Nvidia GeForce and AMD/ATI Radeon) are optimized for 3D games and technologically designed for DirectX10, as speed is more important than image quality.
Typically a 3D model in a game contains a low number of polygons with textures applied to them, while in CAD applications polygon count is high, and the image quality of wireframe models or shaded models is more important than navigation speed. Also, professional cards' memory usage is optimized for using multiple application windows, while in gaming this is not relevant.
Another key difference between the two product lines is the way they are delivered and supported. Professional cards (such as Nvidia Quadro and AMD/ATI FireGL/PRO) are built according to the video chip manufacturer's references, so you can always be sure that the driver delivered by the video chip manufacturer (such as Nvidia or AMD/ATI) fits your card.
The manufacturers of Consumer-Level cards (such as ASUS, Sapphire, Gigabyte, PNY and so on) may diverge from the chip manufacturer's references, so their drivers may not be compatible with the chip manufacturer's reference driver. Also, the product life cycle and driver release cycles are much shorter in case of gaming cards, usually 6 months up to 1 year at most and a 1-year warranty period maximum.

Professional graphics cards differ considerably from "Consumer-Level cards" for private users with regard to specific market segments with special requirements:

Recommended graphics cards for laptops (Windows)

For reasons detailed above, we cannot recommend any specific card and driver combination for laptops. However, there are professional graphics cards available for high-end laptops such as NVidia FX Quadro & Quadro NVidia "M" or AMD/ATI FireGL & FirePro "Mobility".
These graphics cards are just as good as their desktop counterparts.
Laptops with Consumer-Level cards have been tested only briefly and cannot be recommended. We have had bad experience with on-board Intel graphics cards.



Graphics cards drivers for Apple Macintosh

Since Macs come with a default graphics card (on-board or gaming), and the drivers are bundled with system updates, we cannot recommend a specific card.
Graphics cards for MacOsX 10.6 (Leopard) or later and Boot Camp support Open GL 2.0 and DirectX10. Currently, there is only one series that is equipped with a professional graphics card: Mac Pro with NVidia FX4800 for Mac.


Notes for Allplan and Macintosh:

  • There is no provision for a direct installation under Macintosh.
  • Access to Windows must be straight from the Boot Camp installation.
  • For performance reasons, Parallels Desktop cannot be used in conjunction with Nemetschek Allplan.


We kindly ask you to understand that Nemetschek Allplan cannot provide support for Boot Camp installations.



Installing graphics cards drivers (Windows)

Graphics cards only work properly if they have a hardware provider supplied driver (not system built-in driver) installed correctly. It may happen that remnants of a previous installation interfere with the current driver installation. If you experience display issues with the drivers listed below, please "clean-install" the driver again. "Clean-install" means removing all previous driver files before installing a new driver. Unfortunately, a simple uninstall may not efficiently remove all components of a driver. There are tools that can do it, like ATI's cat uninstaller or third-party tools like driver cleaner or driver cleaner pro 1.5.



Graphics card drivers for laptops (Windows)

In most cases, graphic card drivers for laptops are supplied by the laptop manufacturer, and graphic card provider supplied drivers will not install on laptops. This makes it practically impossible for us to test laptop graphics cards. If you are experiencing display issues with your laptop, and your supplier does not offer you a driver update, you might try - at your own risk - to tweak a desktop driver to work on your laptop. Note that this is obviously not encouraged by your laptop supplier.

  • CodeMeter Container, in which Codemeter Container the license with this product key is activated on your computer.


But there is more information available:

  • By pressing the button "Get license details for this product key" you can also view the computer name on which the product key is activated and other details such as expiration date and options.
  • By pressing the button "Get license details for all product keys" this is done for all your product keys.

Note: Since it is a live query each time, it may take a few seconds before the result is displayed.

The license overview in Allplan Connect always gives you an up-to-date overview of who in the office is currently using which license and which license may also be free and can now be used.

Additional tip: You can find out the computer name of your computer quickly and easily using the Allmenu/Services. The computer name is displayed directly there

Question:

How can I fix Allplan program data?


Answer:

You can fix Allplan program data by renaming the program folders and installing an update.
Due to the new names, Allplan cannot find the resources during the update. Consequently, it creates new resources.

To fix Allplan program data, do the following:

You need the latest installation package for your version.
You can download this package from Allplan Connect (www.connect.allplan.com) or from our FTP server.

Accessing the FTP server:
Enter the following address in Windows Explorer (do not use Internet Explorer!):
ftp://nemhotline:ha37jvg8f@ftp.nemetschek.de

You can find the installation packages in the following path:
/download/Allplan/"version"/CD/
Copy the zip file to the local computer and unzip the file.

  • Open the Services application of the Allplan version you want to fix.
  • Select Service -> Windows Explorer -> CAD program folder.
  • Rename the "PRG" folder "PRG_OLD". If Windows Explorer tells you that a file is still in use, restart the computer and try again.
  • Start the *.exe file of the installation package you just unzipped.
  • Select "Update installation".
  • When Setup prompts you for the license, select "Current license file" or "Use active license".
  • Select "Minimum" for the Setup type.



Allplan gets new program resources during installation.
As soon as the installation is complete, you can test how Allplan behaves.


Note:

If you are not sure, give these instructions to your system administrator.
Keep in mind that you install the version of the installation package you downloaded. This means that you may have to reinstall any subsequent hotfixes.

Answer:

Install the "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" driver.
This driver is necessary so that network services are running on the computer all the time.

Step 1: add the computer to workgroup manager

  4. Select the “Allplan” subfolder under the share and click “OK” to confirm. This computer is now listed under workgroup server.

Step 2: define project owner
A user can only move a project if the user is the owner of this project.

Important note: You can take projects with you in several ways.

1. You move the project to the computer.
Move project: Drag the project to the destination computer, or open the shortcut menu of the project and click “Cut”. After this, open the shortcut menu of the destination computer and click “Paste”.
After you have checked in the computer, move the project back to the server so that it is available to all and included in backups again.

2. You copy projects. Click a project, select and hold the Ctrl key and drag the project to the destination computer. Or: Open the shortcut menu of the project and click “Copy”. After this, open the shortcut menu of the destination computer and click “Paste”.

You can continue in two ways: Lock the original project on the server to protect it from changes. Consequently, nobody in the office can work on this project, but it is still on the server. When you check in the computer again, you unlock the project on the server, delete the project and copy your copy back to the server if you have changed the project.
Alternatively, both projects remain active. Consequently, both the project copied and the original on the server can be worked on. In this case, however, you must adjust the data manually when you are back in the office by copying the changed drawing files of the projects by using ProjectPilot.




Step 4: check out the computer
Select the Services application -> Workgroup Manager -> Manage computers and projects.
Click your computer and then click Check outin the lower-right area.
Confirm the message that tells you that there are still user folders on the computer to be checked out.
Enter a comment and click OK. Users in the office see this comment when they try to access a project that is on the computer that is checked out.
Specify the parts of the office standard you want to copy to the computer and click OK to confirm.
The first time you check out the computer, you must copy the office standard once so that the entire STD folder is on this computer. This is no longer necessary when you check out the computer afterward because the contents of the STD folder do not change very often.


Conclusion:

You can now remove the computer from the network and work on your projects when you are out of the office. To make sure that the projects are not changed in the office in the meantime, the projects that are on the computer checked out are locked for the CAD users on the network. These users see the comment you entered when you checked out the computer.

Question:

Why is it not possible to install IBD planning data?
Why does Allplan not accept my activation code?



Answer:

If you have just installed Allplan or if you have used a trial license until now, start Allplan once with your license so that Allplan saves your customer number.
Make sure you install the correct IBD package.

IBD provides additional wizards you can use in Allplan. However, you have to purchase these additional wizards.
Should you have any questions (costs, use), please contact your sales partner.


Some notes on IBD:

IBD CAD Planning Data(building construction, industrial construction, ...) are wizards you can use in Allplan. Consequently, you can only install these wizards on a computer running Allplan.

IBD Building Components(building construction, building alteration, ... ) build on BCM/Nevaris.
If you use Nevaris, you must install IBD building components on a computer running Nevaris andAllplan.
If you want to use IBD building components for BCM, you must install this package on a computer running Allplan BCM.
As you can see, it matters whether you are trying to install IBD building components for Nevaris or BD building components for BCM.
You can find both packages on Allplan Connect.


Make sure you download the right package from Allplan Connect.

You get activation codes for the IBD packages you purchase.
You can see your activation codes on Allplan Connect at http://connect.allplan.com/license.

Pay attention to uppercase and lowercase letters in Setup.

Question:

I want to run Allplan on a terminal server. Can I use any other terminal server than Citrix?



Answer:

Microsoft terminal server or Horizon is not approved for Allplan.
In addition, running Allplan on a terminal server requires an Allplan license server for managing the Allplan licenses.
If you have only used stand-alone licenses until now, you must purchase the additional ‘license server’ option. Should you have any questions, please contact your sales partner.


VM Ware (Horizon) or RDP is not approved for Allplan. This means that you do not get any support for this constellation.
You may not have any problems with the current Allplan version. However, future developments will not take RDP or VM Ware into account. Consequently, this functionality may be limited or not available at all in future Allplan versions.

Citrix is the only terminal server that is approved for Allplan.

Question:
How can I work together on a project with a partner from another country?

Answer:
Using Allplan 2019 and later, you can work on projects across countries.
You can define projects in a country-specific manner. This means that a project gets the resources (for example, hatching, patterns, layers and so on) and reinforcement settings of a specific country. Depending on your license, you can install one or more additional country packages. For example, you can then create a project with resources and settings for Germany and another one with resources and settings for the UK.


Requirements:

Whether you can use country packages depends on the Allplan license.

Only the ‘Cubed’ and ‘Exponential’ license types include country packages.
These license types enable you to use as many country packages as you like. You can create and open projects with any country code.

The ‘Lineared’ and ‘Squared’ license types only include one country package by default. This also applies to all conventional license types such as ‘Architecture’ and ‘Engineering’. In other words, you can only create and open projects with this country code.

Installing country packages:

When installing Allplan 2019 for the first time or upgrading from Allplan 2018 or earlier, you must explicitly install the additional country packages.

A default installation onlyinstalls the country package of your country. If you want to use different country packages, you must do a custom installation. Only a custom installation allows you to select the country packages you want to install.
You can do this whenever you want - be it the first installation or an upgrade or update.

Doing a custom installation:
Start Setup.

Select Customfor the Setup type.
When it comes to selecting Features, you can select the language packages you want to install.
You can see a list of all Allplan languages included in your license.
After this, you can select the countries. Select the country packages you want to install.
Click ‘Next’ to confirm all other dialog boxes.

Note:Please note that the more country packages you select, the longer the installation will take and the more hard disk space will be required.

Using country packages in Allplan:

You must define the country when you create a project. You cannot change the country later.

Creating a new project:
When creating a new project, you can select the county in country-specific templates.
Select the country and the template you need.

If you do not select a project template, you must select the required country in the next dialog box.


In the project:
The status bar shows the country set for a project.
The units for length entries and reinforcement set in the Options are project-specific settings. These units are preset depending on the country selected.



Important note:
  • When checking out a project in a workgroup environment, you can choose which country-specific office standard you want to check out.
  • Click in the ‘License Settings’ to see which countries are included in your license.
  • There is a default country, which is usually the country entered in your license. Setup always installs the data for this default country in the STD and ETC folders. During installation, Setup creates a STD.??? folder and an ETC.??? folder for each additionalcountry package selected (??? stands for the country code). The office path and default path are always based on the country set for the project that is currently open. That is to say, when you open a project and save a favorite or library element in the office path or default path, these elements will only be available in projects with the same country settings. ProjectPilot is an exception; here, the office path and default path always refer to the STD and ETC folders.

Question:

How can I make several computers use the same license server settings?



Answer:


The settings are saved in two files:

  • Lic3LM.ini in C:\ProgramData\Nemetschek
  • Lic3.ini in C:\Users\[user_name]\AppData\Roaming\Nemetschek. To access this user-specific file, use %appdata%/Nemetschek, for example.



Lic3LM.ini in C:\ProgramData\Nemetschek:

This file includes information on server selection, that is to say, the server name and information on whether the ‘Find license server automatically’ option is selected.

What do the values mean?

  • UseWibuList=yes: find license server automatically
  • UseWibuList=no: do not find license server automatically
  • Server=[server_name]: name of license server

  • 100: license is preferred

Note:

Question:

How can I switch Allplan from German to English?



Answer:

Allplan 2018 is the first version to include English in the license by default.
This means that by installing Allplan 2018, you automatically install the English version too.
As a result, you can switch languages using the Services application.

Important! This switch only applies to the program itself.
The content of the defaults (standards and country-specific content) does not change and is still in German.

Before starting Allplan, you can select the language using the Services application.
To do this, select Configuration -> Language. ‘Current setting’ shows the language currently selected.
Select the required language in the area at the bottom, that is, English.
A German default license only includes German and English.





Allplan now starts in English.



Note:

If English is not included in the Services application, you can install this language (or other languages you purchased) at any time.

All you need to do is download the current installation package of the version you use. You can find this package at www.connect.allplan.com

During installation, select Update installationand Use active license.

Select Customfor the Setup type.

When it comes to selecting Features, select the required language(s) in the ‘Language packages’ area.
This area lists the languages included in your license.
Do not change the other settings and click ‘Next’ to confirm the following dialog boxes.




After installation, start the Services application-> Configuration -> Language. Select the required language.
