Just wondering if it is possible to edit layout elements within the layout editor without having to right click and edit drawing file on the element.

No this is the only. You have a model wich can be one or more drawing and you have a presentation (layout).
So if you want to modify your model you have to open the correct file in direct or make a click right on the presentation windows to access quickly to the model.
