Please switch off the option: Working with large coordinates - Optimize

Hi all,

As we are aware of a few cases in Allplan 2020 and Allplan 2021 in which the combination of activated option Working with large coordinates - Optimize (see screenshot) and sections and views used in the project have led to problems, we currently strongly recommend that you deactivate the option if it is not absolutely necessary. It is important to note that each user involved in the project should switch this option off in their own Allplan.

Kind regards
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the warning.
Can you tell me a little bit more about what issues could come up when working with this combination?
And when do you need to work with this option and when not? When are coordinates large coordinates and you need to use this option?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Nick

Hi Nick,

thanks for your questions.

"What issues could come up when working with this combination": in some rare cases we know, that you can lose data if this option is checked. In the reported cases it happend when users leave the plan layout and got back to their Drawing Files. We allready found the causes and fixed them internally. We now are working on distributing this fix as fast as we can. If anyone is affected by this bug: please follow my advice in the first post. And stay tunded here - I will inform about status updates.

"And when do you need to work with this option and when not": large coordinates can show up when you handle a data import (dxf, dwg etc..) incorrectly. Let´s say, in the file thats to be imported are elements far away from the CAD Zero Point and you import them as is, then the elements will be far away from the Allplan Zero Point as well and that can cause follow up problems like patterns, that are not visible sometimes or a strange display of elements in the animation window. For some years now we have a mechanism in Allplan that helps preventing those issues in the first place. But one can ignore Allplans help at importing such a file and then the problem can occur. The option is good for cases in which you detect problems + find out that they are related to large coordinates in your drawing files + do not have time, to repair it propperly (make a project copy and move the data to the Allplan Zero Point). If you check this option in such cases it will probably help. Help, but not solve - thats the different here. So, once you solve the problem, uncheck the option.

When are coordinates large coordinates and you need to use this option? Check the Allplan help for that: https://help.allplan.com/Allplan/2021-0/1033/Allplan/index.htm#81358.htm

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the extra info. I think I understand it all.

One extra question I still have left to get it really all clear. So if I use project offset coordinates to work on a certain project location I am not working with large coordinates, only if I import something that is still far away from my project offset coordinate?
For example I have my project in Amsterdam and I use a project offset coordinate from the centre of Amsterdam. For modelling object in Amsterdam I DON'T have the option to be activated (no large coordinates) but if I try to Import something that is located in New York in this Amsterdam project it DO need this option to be activated (large coordinates), correct?

Kind regards,

Nick

Hi Nick,

First off: you do not have to switch the option on at all when you have no problems in the drawing files like missing patterns etc. or a weird display of 3D-objects in the animation window. So, in general: switch it off and leave it that way unless you face display problems. This option is not part of any workflow except an "emergeny-workflow"

Project Offset coordinates: the only case where you should the project offset is if you a have data in your project that is more than 5000m away from the Allplan Zero point AND b if you are willing to move the data to the Allplan zero point at the same point. In short: set an Offset and move data. Let´s say you discover, that your data is roughly 5000m (X) and 3000m (Y) away from the Allplan zero point. You move the data -5000 (X) and -3000m (Y) AND set an offset of 5000 (X) and 3000 (Y).

Important: Setting an Allplan project offset alone is not moving data. It only adds the given values to any import and any export.

During the import of data Allplan can move the imported data and, to "cover that up" set an project offset at the same time.
Example: you get a file with elements far away from the CAD zero point. You immport them to you project (which has at that moment no offset yet), during the import you let Allplan set and use the offset (with that Allplan moves the imported data to the zero point and saves the moving values as offset). Result: the data is in the near of the zero point and at any point where you export data from that project, the saved values (offset) are added to the exported data - it is with that exported to it´s oribinal coordinates.

I hope, that explains it a bit.

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

It is all clear to me now. Thanks for explaining.
